People got it in the late 1970's. Not as much as they *should* have, but gas consumption dropped significantly during the gas crunch. We haven't reached the inflation adjusted levels where people start curbing their usage on a large scale yet.

I'm not sure where your 15% number came from, unless you're just referring to social security + medicare. Between federal and state income tax, SSI, medicare, and sales taxes paid, about 45 cents of every dollar I make goes to the government. Compare that to about 3 cents of every after tax dollar going to gasoline. Oh well, Americans love socialism, that's all there is to it. If there was a vote to have the government take over all oil companies and gas stations, it would win.
