$4 gasoline is coming
You just said BINGO to the statement that "american want what we tell them to want" and now you are going against that? So I take it you DON'T agree with your BINGO post?
I'd like to see three things happen:
- The general US driving public moderate their gas consumption. Stop charging to stop lights. Stop tooling around in something double their needs because they think it's "cool".
- Press the lawmakers into a serious energy policy, such as 40mpg fleet standard in 10 years
- Detroit adopting the "can do" attitude Honda has on making fuel efficient vehicles
1. Charging to stop lights is as american as apple pie.
2. Lawmakers and politicians.... I don't see that happening. I see people forcing the issue before any law gets created.
3. Detroit becoming like honda.... that will happen when blank freezes over. I think Detroit will be forced to adopt or die. Both are good imo.

I also know people also ruin their health, finances, etc.
It's still possible people can make better decisions.
The average Joe hates spending so much money on fuel. He knows how much better his situation would be if he'd drive more efficiently but won't change his habits. Even if confronted with facts and figures he still considers it his god-given right to consume as much as his pleasure. It is not rational or logical.
Exactly the same as an illicit drug user.
For all of us on the wagon we can see that this world needs detoxification.
How to accomplish that is not clear. $4/g isn't going to do it. The politician who lowers speed limits would get run out of town. Raise CARB is fine until the auto maker lobby secreams loud enough. If CARB didn't sell us out 20 years ago with repealing the non-emission mandate who knows how much better we'd be today.
It's hard to deal with gas junkies who have been on crack since they were 16.

There was an article in our local paper about the Federal 18.4 cents per gallon tax.
Apparently, with more efficient cars, like our hybrids, and the $3.00+ price of gas, the American people are using less gas. This, is robbing the Federal government of its rightfully due, ever increasing, gas tax revenue.
If you ask the right dept in Washington, there must be some sort of conspiracy amongst us otherwise law biding Americans, to use less gas. In other words, they want us to continue to keep using more and more, and forget this foolishness of cutting our reliance on oil.
Talk about being addicted to tax revenue!

Many people need an EDUCATION about the lowered MPG of high-speed driving.
Ask around - you wouldn't believe the number that think the only downside to driving fast is a possible speeding ticket.
I think that an instant MPG gauge should be MANDATORY on ALL new vehicles sold. And it shouldn't be just an optional display. Put it right by the speedo - there's your (self) education.
I fly around faster than I should (too often), but at least I know the consequences.

The guage has its problems also. I don't know about yours, but mine can go from wildly optomistic, to very conservative to spot on when compared to calculated mpg. The first idiot who runs out of gas will sue the company.
I drive64 mph and get passed by semis (?) all the time. I bet those guys know if they slow down their mpg will go up.
On the other side, most of them get paid per mile. So the more miles covered in an hour, means more dollars per hour.
