Default New Prius owner

I picked up my Seaside Pearl Prius on May 19, 2007 and I'm loving it! Due to excel's(Wayne Gerdes) influence, I'm already averaging over 70 mpg with it. I topped the tank up when I got home from the dealer so I would be sure that it was full. A few days later I noticed that my Scanguage was always reading lower mpg than the FCD screen even though the mileage driven was the same on both. I realized that I had forgotten to reset the tank off-set from my old car so I decided to top off and start over. I had 248 miles and struggled to get 3.3 gallons in for 75.1 mpg. The current tank has 368.5 miles on it , have 7 pips left, and it's averaging 72.4 according to the FCD display. There is a little quirk that is a bit confusing though: The car can be fully warmed(as high as 190F) and battery as high as 6 bars and the engine will NOT shut off and glide at 40 mph and under. Ideas? In spite of this, I still LOVE the car!

Newbie alert! I've been looking for the place to add mileage data and can't seem to find it. Help?

Hello, Larry! (Again.) Welcome now to GH!

Click the Prius graphic at the top of any page to take you to the Prius mileage database.

EDIT: Looks like you found it.

Welcome to the club!

Sorry I can't help on the engine continuing to run. I've seen one other posting of this behavior but it remains undiagnosed. My 85,000 mile, NHW11, 2003 Prius doesn't exhibit this behavior. However, Ken once mentioned needed to achieve at least 35 mph before one of the warm-up phases will complete. I've seen this behavior.

Your still in Stage 3. Your route and speeds may not let the engine do the idle check to get to Stage 4. Try this, when you do get a chance to stop, foot firmly on brake push the gas pedal and get the engine to start and wait for the shut-off. RPM's will start in the 900's go up to 1,000 something and then shut-off.

Thanks again Wayne. I'll give that a try if it happens again. Everything seemed to work fine yesterday and has worked fine so far today. I was able to start up at work at 10:00am after the car sat since 5:30am and drove ~1 mile to the bank then 7.7 miles back home and never once had a failed glide. I also ended up with 116 mpg for my efforts from the bank to home.

Wayne got my block heater installed last Saturday morning and it's working great. I can be at 150*F in about 1/4 mile and pretty much fully warmed up in 3/4 mile. By the time I get to the stop sign that's at the 3/4 mark, I can come to a complete stop so the car can make the transition to S-4.

Hi Bob,

I know your NA NHW-11 Prius does not have S2 stage and the engine continues to run until 70C.
Howerver, I believe yours also needs the 5 seconds complete stop of the idling check ceremony to move to S4.
