I'm just doing some reasearch..

I'm looking at the insight mostly.

I need the car for roadtrips. I am planning to drive from atlanta to montreal once a month (3000mile roundtrip).

So I'm looking for a comfy car that gets awesome mileage on the interstate at 70mph.

city driving is not an issue really.

Though the Insight gets the best mpg's...for the same price, you may want to consider 2 more doors, 2 more seats, and a more comfortable ride for those long road trips...like the HCH.

I would also look at the HCH and the Prius.

The insight is the king of mileage but the Prius and HCH are quiet capable and comfier. Both are also probably safer (a feature I would consider if you are gonna do a lot of miles).

I think one thing to consider is battery maintainence. The Prius and (I think) the HCH only comes on automatic. The reason it seems is to in someways protect the battery from being drained to far (the prius is maybe overly picky on this). I've seen stories about the stick shift hybrid batteries not lasting as long as the automatic ones due to too much draining/charging (but I have no real proof that it's true). I don't think that is true for highway driving though as you wouldn't be able to use battery only mode that much.

Ummm....having a standard does not mean a hybrid will have shorter battery life.

The likely reason the 2000 Insight has more battery failures is it was the first year Honda introduced hybrids to the U.S. Later modes are better, as Civics and Accords.

Depending on your time frame it maybe worth the wait for the new Camry to come out. It may give you the comfort level you are looking for and still give improved mileage.
