Toyota Motor's North American president, Jim Press, said today that the company wants hybrids to drive 25% of its U.S. sales by early in the next decade. The Japanese auto maker may also add the gas-electric engine technology to its entire lineup, including trucks.

"To us, it's not a passing phase but a vital technology for the 21st century," Press said at an automotive conference in Michigan. He said Toyota is looking to sell 1 million hybrids worldwide by early in the next decade.
