My 2004 Prius died about a year ago. I was driving in commute traffic when the dash lit up and the car went to full electric. I was able to pull into a parking lot before it stopped completely. I tried restarting it with no luck. After about 15 minutes of standing around scratching my head, a loud click came from the engine compartment. The dash was back to normal. It started right up and I drove it home and then to the dealer the next morning. After explaining the situation, they said that it probably needed a software upgrade, kept the car for about an hour and gave it back to me. I haven't had a problem since.

 

It's a "special service campaign" because Toyota is doing it voluntarily. If they had balked, then the government would have made them do it and it would be a recall.
