Default Senate approves initial ethanol provisions

The Senate stuck by a plan to require nationwide use of ethanol in gasoline, although opponents argued that the additive will increase gasoline prices in regions outside the Farm Belt where most ethanol is produced.

An amendment by Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, that would have kept the measure out of a broad energy bill was rejected 69-28 Wednesday.

The ethanol provision, which require refiners to use 8 billion gallons of ethanol a year, was then approved, 70-26, making it a part of a broad energy bill that Senate leaders hoped to complete in the next few weeks.

Question Re: Senate approves initial ethanol provisions

To me the question is; does this reduce the number of special blends used in the US? By reducing the number of special blends used the overall cost of refining could be reduced. Additionally, regional issues like those faced by Chicago and Arizona when their pipelines burst.
