NYC to adopt hybrid taxis?
Taxis powered by hybrid engines could soon be ferrying customers, city officials said Monday.
The City Council Transportation Committee approved a measure Monday that would require the Taxi & Limousine Commission to approve a hybrid model by this fall. The vehicles would be operated with 81 medallions reserved for cars powered by alternative fuels.
Matthew Daus, chairman of the taxi commission, said in an interview that hybrid cars have in the past been too small to operate effectively as taxis. But customer demand has prompted automakers to make different models.
