The opinion of the hypermiler was that the battery is charged from excess energy produced by the engine and brakes. His premise is that you save more gas by only producing the energy that you need, not producing excess. He also pointed out that not using the brakes is more efficient than using the brakes to save electricity.

I 'm pretty sure that I'll never be that efficient of a driver.

My latest Insight-II adventure involved driving through some mountainous regions in West Virginia. Even with some pretty steep hill climbing, I managed to get 49.1 MPG. This car consistantly beats the EPA score (and also beats the Prius on the highway!)
