I've had my Insight for about 2 years now. This is how I use my A/C and my trip meters:
When I use it (which I try not to since it really does lower my mpg by 15-20 mpg) I always use the Econ mode. I keep the fan on a manual setting (if you don't see the little fan icon then it is on auto - you need to push the fan button to put it on manual). If you keep the fan on manual it keeps blowing when you are in autostop.
When I don't want the A/C but only want vented air I push the Econ button until it says A/C off and turn the 'temp' down to 60 - this then blows fresh air into the car.
When I have the A/C on but am driving up a long or steep incline I briefly turn the A/C off (and turn the 'temp' down to 60) and let it blow air until I reach the top of the incline and I am not having to rely on my asist, then I turn the A/C back on. In otherwords I am constantly turning the a/c on and off. This helps to keep my mpg high even on those days when I have to use the a/c.
I only use full a/c (not econ so that the car never goes into autostop) only on those st louis summer days when the heat index is above 100.
Regarding trip meters: I never reset the lifetime mpg (even tho wehn I bought my used car the lmpg was 56.4 - I have now managed to raise it to 58.2 with careful driving). I reset Trip A everytime i fill up the tank. I reset Trip B on the first of every month. ANd I use the FCD meter as my daily commute meter.
