Default 2002 INSIGHT MILEAGE

HELLO ALL;
I AM NEW TO THIS SO I WOULD LIKE TO POSE A QUESTION. I JUST BOUGHT MY FIRST HYBRID, A 2002 INSIGHT CVT. OVERALL MPG FOR THE FIRST 100 MILES I HAVE DRIVEN IS 44 MPG. THIS SEEMS TO DIFFER GREATLY FOR SOME OF YOUR POST I HAVE READ. IS THIS COMMON, HAS ANY ONE HAD A FAILURE THAT ENDED UP WITH THIS KIND OF MILAGE????
LEIF

Leif,
I don't own an Insight so I can't give any specific tips, but you can see the mileage others are getting here: https://www.greenhybrid.com/compare/...nsightcvt.html

Check the air preasure in your tires. Thats one of the major things that will affect milage. Your comute also is a major factor. If you are doing a lot of city driving thats going to hurt you. I think there are some tips in the learn section that gives the basics on what you can do to improve milage.

I have a 2002 Insight as well, and I have found that there are two situations where I would get MPG like yours:
1. Driving like a bat out of hell on freeways (constantly 80+MPH). I would get mileage in the upper 40's. How fast are you going on freeways?
2. In winter (subzero) temperatures. I get from 40-50MPG in winters.

My average in ideal conditions (neither of the above) is around 57MPG, that's the EPA estimate so don't expect more than that unless you are into crazy hypermiling techniques.

I would add to Kevin's post extreme stop-and-go could result in low milage.

Do you know what your lifetime mpg was before you got your Insight? That could be a hint of what kind of condition it's in. If there was much milage on it by the previous owner and the mpg was 45 or worse, I'd suspect the previous owner drove badly, had mechanical problems, or both.

Thumbnail advice on getting better Honda fuel economy: monitor the dashboard constantly. Over the next few weeks/months you will learn how to maximumize your fuel economy, even if you drive agressively (not saying you do). In concert with the tips at GreenHybrid, your mpg should improve.

Thank you very much for your responce. The car had 21,465 when I got it. Very low mileage for an 02. Will be changing oil as I have no idea if it had to heavy of an oil put in it. Did bump the tire psi form 30 to 42. Mileage does seem to be getting better however the ride has suffered. A compromise I am more than willing to make.
Thanks again.

You got it, most don't buy the Insight for it's excellent ride quality (sarcasm there ) .

What brand tires are on it? That killed my 2000 Insight's mileage when I got it. I consistantly got 58-60MPG driving like a granny holding up traffic wherever I went. Once I switched to the OEM type tires I driving the same way I got mid to high 70's. Now I drive keeping whatever pace the traffic is going and still get mid to high 60's and it's colder weather too.

I've heard a lot of people normally getting mid 50's in their CVT Insight - that being said without checking the CVT mileage database.

Good Luck.
