It's not going to hurt your HCH one bit to change the so called "special break in oil" out early. It's still going to run the same at 50k, 100k, 200k miles (all else being equal) no matter if you change out the so called "special break in oil" at 500 miles, 1k, 2.5k, 5k, 7.5k. It's a honda, as long as you do the maintaince it will last a long time. Doing additional maintance won't hurt it, you can argue if it will help any, but it certainly won't hurt it.

Can you explain why they put in specially formulated oil? Just for kicks?

Honda specifically told me when speaking to customer relations that the break-in oil is needed and recommended to stay until the maintenance minder comes on otherwise the engine will not be primed as well if the additives are not given a chance to do their job.

Go with the maintenance minder.

Part of that maintenance is to leave the special "break-in" oil in for the specified amount of time.

Cr@p I just noticed that the local repair shop put in 10w 30 oil in my hybrid after I did an oil change there, should I be worried?

I'd be pissed. I don't know for sure, but I doubt it would do damage. It will probably decrease your FE. I'm guessing you are going to take it back to the shop, have them swap out the oil and filter, and maybe give you a free oil change for next time.

I'd have them take it out but I suspect that most local repair shops won't have the right oil... That's why I either do it myself or at the dealership (which even then does not guarantee the right oil).

My maintance minder is going to say change the oil sometime inbetween 8-9k miles, if you think the engine is still being broken in after a couple thousand miles you're sorely mistaken. The engine will loosen up after 2k (obviously it will be more loose at 200k or even 20k than it is at 2k), but after a thousand or two miles the engine is WELL broken in...no need for "special" break in oil.

Honda is lying to us. Thanks for letting me know. The next time I have a concern, I will avoid the owner's manual or customer service. Instead, I'll just ask you. I know you wouldn't lie to me like Honda does. I can trust you.
