I test drove an '05 and the stock head unit was fine as far as function but the speakers were pretty awful. I assume (I understand the risks) that the '06 with 160W will be far and away a better sounding stereo.

 

The '05 is nothing spectacular, but then no stock equipment usually is. After market is the way to head for sound; it's the stock FE a hybrid is good for.

 

I just drove and 06 ex coupe, non hybrid, on a 100 mile trip today and a 06 lx 4 door non hybrid on same distance return. The EX has the nicer radio with sub woofer where as the LX does not have this feature. Also EX has aux input jack on dash, no such thing on LX. The radios in 06 models are nicer than the 05 models. You can upgrade the 05 radios to an aftermarket radio, but I dont see how you could on the 06 as the radio is part of the dash and not a standard radio.

According to the brochure, the 06 HCH comes with same radio as the EX. Better make sure you like it since you cannot easily change it without major dash mods.

 

It seems that Honda has a plan if you want a cd changer. They change out the radio panel on dash and you get what looks like an 05 model ($2) radio, and away goes the nice LCD radio and dash panel. Sucky looking from what I see in the accessory book.

I saw it in the dealer accessory book for the 06 Civic at the dealer. Salesmen have this book available for those wanting cd chanber/tape/xm options

 

I found this info. out this evening from reading the sales book that the Honda dealers have in their store.

You need (Brochure-Z1615-Civic Hybrid Accessories) this will tell you what all is available for your new HCH from dealer.

I think you want have any problem with the Factory System especially if you add the X/M satellite Radio Option to the HCH which is dealer installed. There is also a Bass-Speaker System available for the Sedan Civic but I do not know yet if it is for the HCH? I need the brochure that I mentioned to you about, going to try to get my hands on one tomorrow (Saturday).

The pre '06 stereo is seriously the worst thing ever sound-quality wise. It's atrocious. I got an aftermarket head unit for my '04. The 06 dash configuration looks like you can't do an aftermarket install... at least not easily. So they better have made it better. (I needed to be able to plug an ipod into it.)

But since this car has 300 hp, gets 50 mpg, and was made with only $15,ooo in grants, I don't worry much about the 06 HCH anymore. This is my next car:
