Scratch removal

I have done the unthinkable already. I noticed today that I have scratched (lightly) the silver area around the gear shift. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to "clean" the scratches?

chrome polish/cleaner, or stainless steel cleaner like you would use for kitchen sinks might work.

I'd test for abrasiveness first though.....
