Another option is to throw the other guy's lousy MPG in his face with something like . . .
U GUZZL or U GZZL
(for "you guzzle")

i wanted something very clever for my first foray into custom plates for my new 2005 HCH. i was working with the clerk at the DMV and she kept looking and everything i could think of was in use. actually, this is a good thing, since it means there are a lot of them out there.
i eventually settled for BEGREEN.....covers my environmental feelings, too.

Hybrid License Plates
I've had my license plate on my HCH for about three months. It says "MPG NV". I originally wanted NV MYMPG, but it was snapped up in the few short weeks that it took for me to get the vehicle registration number (needed to reserve the plate)! Maybe in some of your states it's still available?
Some other ideas I tried that were also taken:
GAS SIPR (also tried GAS S1PR)
MPG 2NV
CVC DUTY (it's one's civic duty to be environmentally responsible, and what better car to do it in than a hybrid Civic?)
Another that I thought would be fun, and was "available" (per the DMV website), but I didn't have the gumption to try: PUK OFEC. Probably wouldn't have made it through the DMV censors.
Edit: When I was in university, paying $35k/year (or actually borrowing that in loans), my license plate was "HI 2ISHN". Now that I'm in med school, I can't really complain - we all have tons of loans.
