Negative Camber Problem; What You Need To Do To Get The Upper Control Arms Replaced
You would think my dealer would have mentioned it when I took it there every 6 or 7k miles and they did the "31 point inspection". Even when the uneven wear was obvious they gave uneven wear a "green light" but told me the tires were generally worn. I obviously will watch the tread myself and have the new tire installer do the free tire rotations and inspections. Tire sales and maintainence are a recent thing for car deals (they used to tell me "go get a new set at a tire store" so I don't think they pay attention to the tires as much.
Hello all
I just had my control arms replaced by the dealer. When I went in at 15000 miles they told me that the wear was caused by over inflation of the tires -what ever!!!. Now at 26k miles the wear is so bad the tires only have 5/32 and 4/32 left on the inside halves of the tires. They replaced the control arms after I told them about 08-001, and this time they could see the massive amount of wear. However because I went over 25k there was nothing the dealer or Honda USA would do about the tires. Quoted be 595 for the four of them.
On a positive note the car is much more quite, and smoother. I got the numbers and will post them later, but honda said they had never seen them all as bad as mine.
The service manager said "every time you by a new car you should have the alignment check before leaving the dealer"
All is well that ends well.

My wear was the OUTSIDE edge of the tires; I think it was just alignment, not negative camber. They made it 37k but I still think I could have gone longer. Sears will take care of my tires from now on.
Well, I want to get the work done since I definitely noticed the roaring noise during some times in the cycles of tire rotations. Not so much now since I didn''t rotate the last service.
But I scheduled an appt and they want me to pay full $ for it since I am at 55,000 mi. Out of warranty. Should I contact Honda of America, since I did indeed mention the issue to the technicians last April and they did nothing about it?

I would definitely call Honda of America. Especially if you have documentation that you told them about the issues. If anyone can do something about it, it's them.
Hi, Service Bulletin 08-001 was upated February 5, 2009. The models affected by the inner rear tire wear are:
2006-2007 Civic 2-Door - ALL Except Si and Honda Accessory HFP Package
2006-2007 Civic 4-Door - ALL Except Si
2006-2007 Civic Hybrid - ALL
2008 Civic Hybrid - From VIN JHMFA3...8S000001 thru JHMFA3...8S010456
See this link:
http://www.in.honda.com/Rjanisis/pubs/SB/a08-001.PDF
My 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid had the "C" rear control arms installed at the factory and the VIN is larger than the range in the service bulletin, but I still have rear inside tire wear/cupping problems that started to occur around 15K miles and caused rumbling sounds.
There is over 20K on the car now and the dealer will pay for 3 tires but they say there is no problem. They have had it on the alignment rack and they said everything was ok.
So I am a science experiment now.

I am experiencing ALL of the above stated noises and vibrations. I printed out 08-001 and brought it to the dealer. They said that my vin# doesn't fall within the effected 08 Civics. Next they said it's just uneven tire wear. Then, they said it's our of alignment. Now I need new tires. My issue is simple. WHAT IS CAUSING THE UNEVEN TIRE WEAR? I am experiencing all of the symptoms stated in 08-001. I'm not going to invest in new tires until the cause of the problem has been determined. By the way, we only have 24K on the car!!
Honda paid for 3 out of 4 tires. The dealership put it on the alignment rack after I told them it was just put on their rack. They tried to charge me for an alignment and I refused to pay it. I also refused to pay for the labor since they told me I only had to pay for 1 of the tires.
This whole thing took several weeks to line out and I am not very happy about the whole affair.
We will see what happens with the tire wear now.
I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a AAS in Automotive Technology and I am a former ASE Master Mechanic. Man has been able to engineer a car that will not wear out the inside edge of a tire for over 50 years and I do not see why this is such a difficult thing to do now.

I just had my 2006 HCH2 with 35,000 kilometers on it in for the upper control arm issue. Honda installed the new arms and still could not get the alignment within spec.. They had to install new rear springs in order to get the alignment to spec.. So it sounds like there is more to this problem than just upper control arms? Hal
