Smile mudguards- are they needed?

I just ordered a 2006 civic hybrid w/nav, and the dealer though it would be nice to add (at a $157) some Mudguards.
Is this something that will help the car? And, to us fuel misers, will this reduce the mpg?
Thanks. PS. I'm a new member, but a long time hybrid kid. (my other car is a toyota prius.)

I've got them on my '03 HCH. I think they've probably helped cut down on rock chips, not sure if they helped cut down on mileage. I'll be moving onto a dirt road soon in my quest for a simpler life in the country - I know they'll help then, but that's just me.

IMO - I like them cause they really do cut down on stuff that gets on the side of the car from the road.

Buy them after you get the car and install them yourself. I believe they just screw on using existing screws. It will probably take you 20 minutes to do all four.

I don't remember their price, but I wouldn't pay more than $20 to get them installed maybe $40 if I was being generous.

Pros. protects from dirt and tar

Cons. Black and can stand out. may reduce FE at high speed.

I say yes to having them on the car, as to you doing the install or the dealer thats up to you.

Just a thought for you, you did say that you have a 06 HCH W/Nav. coming, correct? if you can afford that, whats the real logic behind not buying the Mud Guards?

That remark is not meant to be taken as sarcastic but just to say if $23,900.00 dollars isn't a problem, how can a set of Mud/Splash Guards be?

Get the guards:

Terry

good point tiger terry.
I just have never thought about, or had, mudguards.
And, it's a hybrid. All of us do not want to burn more gas (that's why we like hybrids, and with mudguards sticking out, it seems like it's not helping.
Do you have mudguards tiger?

$58 + shipping. If you can use a screwdriver, you can install them yourself

I bought them from Handa Accesorries. I have the 05 and put them on in about 15 mins. Just screwed them in. The made the car look nicer to the point that the gf even noticed them. Have not noticed a loss in MPG and during the rain/rocky roads help keep the car cleaner.
