I have made it about 100 miles and could have keep going without gas bars lit up. I have been wanting to do a real test by keeping a can of gas in the trunk to refill when I run out but I have been too busy.

Adam;
Yeah I think it depends on alot of different variables like speed, wind, A/C, cruise on or off, hills, rain etc.
Gas can a must for a real test:

Last time I went to zero bars, I stopped right away and filled up to within a half gallon of the supposed tank size, leading me to believe I only had about 25 miles left. Enough to make me think it's more of a real gas gauge than any other car I've had.

On my first fill up I took it down to one bar and had to put 10.39 gallons.

Another 100 miles of gentle i.e. less than 50 mph driving. To give 600 miles, in my case, over all. But why bother? I am content to refill when the last bar goes out (and do not wish to carry a gas can).

I seem to recall reading in the owner's manual that running it to empty could damage the catalytic converter. I should probably go back and see if I can find that warning before attempting to run it too low myself.
