I've heard accounts that the Civic hybrid attains similar MPG to the Prius and is overall a more "traditional" car. Does anyone have first-hand experience, and if so, what is your take?

This site looks great but I think it could use some more information on the Honda Civic Hybrid. I have been very pleased with my HCH CVT 2004 thus far (only 2000 miles on it so far). On highway drives, I am able to get 47-48 miles per gallon but on short trips my mileage drops down to the 37-38 mpg realm. I will keep everyone posted on how the car does after it's first oil change/service (My hope is that the mileage will increase by 3-4 mpg).

I like what you have done with the photos/info on the Toyota Prius. I have numerous photos and information from the Honda Hybrid Yahoo groups. Maybe I could put together some information about the HCH for the readers?

My experience with the car has been great so far but it really seems strange how Honda has backed off on the marketing (compared to the Toyota Prius). Most of my friends had no idea that a Honda Civic Hybrid even existed (So I end up being the major "advertising" for Honda).

Would you be interested in writing an article or two for our database? Since your car is still relatively new, perhaps you'd like to write a review (like my Toyota Prius' "Meet Midori").

I'd like to start pulling together photos and other files, but actually right now I'm finishing up a real downloads section with statistics, thumbnails, etc. that will replace the current "File Archive" forum. It should work great

rgamfin, i find those mpg numbers very interesting...i would have thought it would have gotten more. i have heard countless cases of toyota echos getting similar numbers.
*i am in no way dissing the civic hybrid, it is a great step for hybrids and a giant leap for the industry.*

 

rgamfin, On my HCH, Before my 1st oil change the best I could get was 46.1 MPG hwy@65 Mph .At 3000k I'd change the oil and my MPG when up to 49.3 hwy@65mph. The mpg's are at the pump.Here in the New York the temps are around 10 to 34 degs.Waiting for the warmer temps to arrive for better MPG's.On the other hand in the city the best I'd can do is 36 MPG.

Hi, I'm a new member here, some may recognize me on other sites.

I bought my HCH on Jan 28.
Currently have driven about 3500 miles.

There was a discussion a few posts back about MPG on a new HCH.

When mine was new I didn't really know how to get the best MPG and only got about 42mpg.
My last overall tank average has been:
2-27 52.6MPG
2-22 53.7
3-02 55.6

And now that the weather is turned wamer here in Hot Atlanta my daily trips of 44 miles are upper 50's to lower 60's MPG

Current tank is still 3/4 full and so far 57 point something MPG.

However, I must mention that my driving is not typical. I work a 6PM to 2AM shift
and can take advantage of this in my driving habbits.

I owned a 2001 Prius for three years and 58,000 miles of varied driving. I had no complaints or faults with that car. I had it to the summit of Pikes Peak -- 14,110 ft above sea level and acroos the Tallgrass Prairie Park in Oklahoma. That car performed flawlessly aa advertised.

I now have a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid. Total miles driven at this time is about three thousand. A calculated mpg at 2,269 miles was 44.5 mpg -- within 1 mpg of the in car computation. The last 190 miles the in car computaion is 49.9 mpg equal mix cuty and highway. City being Plano TX. Tire pressure is at 40 psi a + difference of about 2.5 mpg better than at the recommended 35 psi. Side wall max allowable pressure is 51 psi.

Things I miss about the 2001 Prius are 1., Turtning radius radius (20.5ft), center dash mounted instrument cluster ( just behind the windshield), 3.,the seats, 4. being able to drive in stealth ( all electric or golf cart mode).

Things I consider more important and why I now have the Civic: 1. Intercahngeable parts i.e., not having an orphan vehicle for repair purposes.,2.alternate sources of parts other than manufacturer = ease of repair on the raod and in west Dry Gulch Texas. 3. the Civic will run if the Hybrid system is inoperative. 4. gas mileage as good or better than my 2001 Prius on a simpler system of engineering.
, 5. It was available when I wanted a new car.
Things I do not like about the Civic are: 1. The drivers seat feels like granite and 2. th mileage killer -- being able to shift directly from reverse into second gear with out a detent position as an attention getter.
An aside, a daughter who is a police officer and drives about seven to eight hours a shift said the Civic handkles better. Agaijn this is the classic Prius not the 2004 which is an entirely different ball game.
Would I have the Civic if the 2004 Prius was as available as the Honda Civic Hybrid, probably, no.

Am I happy with the Civic -- most definitely

Dealers and sales people Honda way over Toytota at this exchange of vehicles. As with all experiences your mileage may vary.

Nether car is better or worse. They both performed up to expectations of Honda and Toyota automobiles. They are just different.

Where did you get the turning radius of 20.5 ft for the Prius THS? As seen on https://www.greenhybrid.com/compare/lineup/index.php , the only page on all of Google I could find said 15.4 (rediculously low)
