How is digital MPG calculated?

How is digital MPG calculated?
Does anyone know how the car actually calculates that MPG displayed? Is it a computer simulation of some sort or is it actually measuring fuel flow and calculating mpg directly with real data?
Also, I didn't notice it until someone else mentioned it in another thread, but I do see that it only changes in .3 or .4 mpg resolution. What's up with that? If this is a metric conversion issue, then does the metric version really only do whole miles per liter with no decimals?

Re: How is digital MPG calculated?
I use the MPG display as a best guess as with my car it's off by as much as 10% on some tanks as opposed to at the pump MPG. I personally don't worry about .3 or .4 mpg but then that's just me.Kevin

Re: How is digital MPG calculated?
I think it does somethink like calculate mileage in L/100km or something then converts the metric (with a resolution of .1) to mpg. This is why it always jumps by .3 or .4.
BTW, what do Europians call mileage since they don't use miles? Do they call it kilometerage?
