Default Buy or steer clear (2012 Honda Civic Hybrid

I have a chance to buy a 2012 Civic Hybrid from a friend. 188k on the clock. It’s at a Honda Dealership. They’re telling him the electric IMA motor is bad (I’m thinking they mean the inverter fried out and they quoted him $3,000 to fix it.). Anyhoo…he’d sell me the car for $1,000. New snows and summer tires, new 12V battery, brakes all around. Adding it all up: $1,000 for the car, $500 for a new IMA inverter I install myself. My question is this: Should I pull the trigger on this gamble or should I run and not look back? Thoughts and comments appreciated!
