If I ever get around to doing it, I was going to do this for all the self-serve maintenance items. Feel free to grab your camera and start a thread when it comes time to do one of your maintenance items!

Regarding that one oil change the dealership did, without returning the 1/2 quart of extra oil: my bet is they just overfilled, pouring the whole quart in, if they're on the same wavelength as our dealership.
Overfill is worth avoiding: it's hard on mileage (makes your crankshaft work harder), can cause frothing/leakage, and is generally a waste of oil. If you're not burning any oil between changes, halfway between the low and fill marks on the diptick is actually the sweet spot.

I have found that in most cases the tech simply keeps the Extra Oil and puts it in His Vehicle that uses Oil.........
