Thanks for all the replies! I know in the long run, it's the total savings on gasoline, NOT the individual FE of one car or the other! Like I said, I just allowed myself to get so obsessed with my FE that I wasted gas by using my pickup. I was curious if other people did that also!

LOL, similar thoughts I confess - I'm so obsessed with keeping the mpg number up that I won't let the wife run errands in town because the mpg rating goes down more when she drives in town than when I do. So I now run all the errands. And I know I am going to rear end someone one day because I'm gliding in neutral and have my eye on the mpg display instead of on the road! Call me obsessive/compulsive I guess......

That's funny. I never said it, but I hate for my wife to drive the hybrid! I had the car up to 72 mpg once, she took it on a 50 mile trip....when she got back, the mileage was down to 49! Thanks for the laugh!

Question Re: Wasting Gas to improve FE?

WWWest,

I sometimes drive 2-3 miles farther to work (especially in the wintertime) - because it takes so long for my car towarm up. My work commute is about 6.4 miles and I can get around 40mpg. If I go the extra 2-3 miles I can get 50 to 60 mpg! Over a tank this adds up. I actually wish I lived further from work! I also take my Honda Fit on shorter trips to town on the weekends.

I've thought it and done it when the trip is a short one (just around town). As I type this, my wife has taken the HCH to go food shopping because #1 son has the other car this morning. After "working hard" yesterday to get 50+ mpg on my commute, it pains me just a little to know that the mpg for the tank will now probably be below 50 when she returns. I'm especially fretfull in the winter because if I drop below a 50.4 mpg average in the database I lose my green star! My one year average was 50.7 over 44,475 miles, but I will likely dip below during the stretch of high 40 mpg tanks in colder weather.

RI-brid,

Do you have a blockheater? I've found it helps the winter FE.

Unfortunately, no on the block heater. I'm afraid to try it myself and my dealer has not installed one. Should get it done for this winter or at least block up the grill as shown in some photos by MSantos.
