Default recal every day now

Hey all,

I have a 2007 hch2 and I was really doing great. I could get about 60mpg per tank and had some really impressive numbers. During all that I would have recals-when I say that I mean the battery without explanation goes from 5-7 bars of charge all the way down to 1 and mpg suffers accordingly during the recharge period since assist does not work. During this past summer it got pretty bad where it would do it every 2-3 days, especially when I had family in the car and had to run the ac.

In October two things happened. My check engine light came on and the honda dealership discovered the catalytic converter was malfunctioning. They replaced it. I also replaced the tires the next day. Since the standard dunlops were not available at the shop I picked up some michelins, which were rated for 90k miles. After that my mpg really suffered. I struggle to get 60mpg on the way to work (35 mile drive) when I used to easily get 70-80. My overall tanks have dropped to about 48-50mpg.

However, the most disturbing thing about all of this is that my car will now recal on a daily basis, even though it is cooler (live in texas). I brought this up to the dealer when it was doing it much less often and after calling around (they didn't know the answer to my question) they told me it was a normal process and if the lights didn't come on the battery was fine. I'm not so sure I believe that.

Does anybody have a clue what I am experiencing here?

thanks for any insight....

jco

The mileage drop is almost certainly due to the tire change. People left and right are reporting how much their mpg suffers once they're off OEM tires. Best anybody can suggest there right now is to just make sure they're pumped up, balanced, and aligned. On the recal issue, I'm stumped. In warm weather, mine will recal once every three or four months, though when the weather turns cold, it'll throw a fit for a week or two, and then settle into "winter mode" (for lack of a better term), where it settles down into maybe once a month recals until things warm up again.

I have had one recal in 33,000 kil. or about 20,000 miles, so I think every day is a big problem. I believe there is another thread dealing with this problem. You may want to check it out. Look back Sept , Oct. time frame. H

Interesting--you are having a problem that several '06 owners experience, but you're the first '07 owner I've seen.

I started logging my recal events on 7/30/08 and it has happened 40 some times since then. During the summer, it was a daily thing, but now that the temps are cooler, it only happens once or twice a week. I've taken it to the dealership twice and they can't reproduce the problem. They had me fill out a questionaire from American Honda regarding the problem that asked several questions about how hilly my commute was, if I parked outside, average temperatures, etc. but I haven't heard anything back regarding that. Have your dealership contact American Honda about the problem since they don't think there is a problem unless if there is an idiot light on.

On one of the trips to the dealership, they upgraded my software, but that actually made things worse in my case (hense starting the log). It's possible that they saw that your car was not up to the latest version so they upgraded you when your check engine light was on. I don't have any information that the upgrade is buggy, but I did notice an increase in assist affinity after the upgrade.

This is such an amazing car, and this problem is really frustrating to me.

I'm the opposite. Over the summer I'd get a recal maybe once every 1 1/2 weeks. Now it's like every 3rd day. I'm hoping like the other poster that it'll eventually settle into "winter" mode and be fine. But I sorta doubt it since I only have a 7 mile commute and ever since the battery recall they raised the temp where the battery is allowed to regen such that it hardly gets to regen normally in the winter now.

During the outrageously hot summer (in the 100s for days on end) my car would recal 2 times a week. When it's in the 90s it recals every week or so. Now that it's cooler (been in the 70s and 80s) it hasn't done it. I have a large current draw from my aftermarket audio system, so that may contribute to the issue. Also, my mileage drops during the summer due to the oxygenated gas we have here. Now that the summer program has ended, my mileage went up by 12mpg.
