My wife actually likes my driving now that I have the hybrid. I think mainly she likes that I drive slower. She originally hated the speedo, but now that she has ridden in the car enough, she actually likes being able to see it from the passenger seat.

Well, I just filled up my tank for the second time and I'm happy to report that I finished it at 660 miles and 61 MPG. The light was on and I had no bars, but it was 10.8 gallons, so I had 1.5 gallons left. I really think my 25 mile commute helps.

You all inspired me to try harder. I just wrapped up a tank that got me 750.4 miles on 11.5 gallons. I'm glad that's over with . What a pain! I did learn to that backing off the assist at about 25MPH and then slowly continue the climb to target speed goes a long way to conserving the pack. I had no forced regens during the tank.

I had to appolgize to my wife several times about my driving during the process. Argh!

Still plugging along on the present tank. 60.2 mpg with about 400 miles done so far. I MUST hit 60 this time!! Pretty thin margin for error, though! Actually I suspect I'm closer to 61 right now, due to the normal error (display vs. calculated). Wish me luck!

I just hit 854 miles, then chickened out and filled the tank. I had been driving for about 75 miles after losing the last bar, and didn't want to run out of gas. When I started this tank (back on May 16!) I crammed every last drop I could into it, figuring with warm weather arriving maybe I could hit 800 miles. As I got down towards empty, it was pretty obvious that I would hit 800, and had glancing thoughts about going for 900.

When I filled the tank I was disappointed. 12.3 gallons. I could have made 900 miles. But I really didn't want to drive around with a gas can in the trunk, and my wife already thinks I'm nuts so calling her to bring gas wouldn't have made her think me any smarter...

I can post a picture if someone wants to talk a computer moron through it. I've tried the host web sites, but can't seem to get the picture to show up correctly in the post after hosting it and inserting the url using Insert Image.

Wow, that is a lot of miles on a tank! You're calculated MPG will be higher than actual, due to not filling it as full after the long tank.

toast64...amazing, way to go. What was your mpg for that tank?

I, too, have issues uploading pics. I was able to do it once and forgot how I was able to do it. I always get an "invalid file" error message.

I posted the following almost 1 year ago (August 1, 2007):

I just filled up my HCH II this morning. I went 1,043.7 miles at 74.4 mpg according to the dash. I put in 14.035 gallons. My last fill up was July 1.

The tank was topped off. I tried very hard for fuel economy this entire tank. I drove extra miles in the process. I did lots of FASing and some P&G. This tank was all my driving. (No wife driving on this one.)

This is amazing but how did you get 14.035 gallons in a 12.3 gallon tank?

The stated capacity in my manual is 12.4 gallons. Some HCHII's have different stated capacities. This capacity refers to the level where a normal pump would first shut off all the way down to empty. There is still a lot of gas available from the time the low fuel light comes on. There is still about 2 gallons left after the last bar disappears. Now, after the pump stops, you can still get about 1.9 gallons more in the tank. This gives a total capacity 14.3 gallons. I'm certainly not condoning topping off, but I have done it a few times.
