Re: Matt's hch2 blog
Agree to disagree. I will post my data from last week when I had two identical days of temp, destination, etc. and noticed a slight difference in the "EV Assist" technique and the "100+ mpg but no EV Assist" technique. Real quick - when I did it my way it was 16.7 mi @ 57.4 mpg and 50 F. When I did it your way it was 17.4 mi @ 57.0 mpg and 54 F. Granted this difference is not huge but my day was 4 F colder but I got 0.4 mpg better over almost the same distance.
My best result heading to that same destination (it was the first destination of the day four days in a row) was 7.2 mi @ 73.9 mpg and 62 F. That same trip in reverse (i.e. heading up the nice long downgrade) resulted in 14.6 mi @ 50.6 mpg and 60 F. Now, drop those temps to the low 50s and the best FE that I see is around 55-60 mpg.
At the end of the day when I tried your technique I had:
Day: 82.0 mi @ 51.0 mpg and 55 F
Tank: 36.6 mi @ 50.3 mpg and 55 F
At the end of the day when I tried my technique I had:
Day: 136.0 mi @ 51.6 mpg and 55-60 F
Tank: 172.6 mi @ 51.2 mpg and 55-60 F
So when I resorted to my technique for around my locale it seems to work better (that is - getting 100+ mpg and using EV Assist for getting over hills or coasting along the flats longer/farther). I know that the distances are not the same but on my day I got to 71.4 mi @ 51.6 mpg and 58 F or close to the previous total of 82 miles but I had 0.6 mpg better FE. I'll post the raw data later but this was just a quick showdown - don't let Matt sway you I say ... use that EV Assist. =)

Re: Matt's hch2 blog
Matt - Here are my last three days of data. Two of the days were good temps with Nov 30th hitting an amazing 70 F (record high in Pittsburgh). On the 30th I thought it was interesting to note the initial FE arriving downtown at the parking garage and then the resulting FE upon departing. On Dec 1st the temps dropped from 59 F at 11 AM to 39 F at 6 PM -- ack.

Re: Matt's hch2 blog
agree to disagree, darren, although my 6th tank totals don't help my argument. dam_n these colder temps!
6th tank totals:
544mi @43.2mpg
refilled 12.6 gal @ $2.56/gal
3420 total miles.
gas up 10 cents/gal since the election.

Re: Matt's hch2 blog
Same here, Matt. Your methods got me lower numbers than normal one day but my method the next day was lower than with your methods. Argh. I've been tracking things though and just think it is more of a factor with wind, road conditions, how many lights you make instead of having to stop, etc.
For example, on 11/30 my avg temps were 67 F and I drove 60 miles at 50.4 mpg while on 12/05 the avg temps were 31 F and I drove 85 miles at 47.9 mpg. For only a drop of 2.5 mpg when the temps dropped in half are simply phenomenal. I don't think this was by any method I was doing or not doing. Other days were 81 miles at 44.7 mpg and 24 F, 75 miles at 48.6 mpg and 53 F, and 90 miles at 52.1 mpg and 54 F.
I love the higher FE numbers but I can't tell a huge drop in FE yet with the colder temps though the sub-32 F days are always under 45 mpg and temps over 50 F yield above 48-50 mpg. I am using a Block Heater so maybe that is helping. I should not use it for a week and see what happens. I'll try to post my numbers but there are lots and lots of them with 6 lines for each day and I have 10 days so far of info.
