keep 2007 hchii or get the new 2012 vw passat tdi
Hey
Just thinking... I currently have a 2007 hchii, and a 2006 jetta tdi..
I like both car very much...mpgs are great. However the new Passat TDI gets great mpgs, and is much larger then my Civic...I still have a loan on the Civic..If i could get more then I own, then what would be the down side? With my real world mpgs after 78,xxx is 44.9 fuel would be a wash, but I also would not have to worry about the Traction battery. Would love the hear what everyone has to think on this.

I was doing a search on the same subject when I found this thread. I have a '06 HCH II and I bought it this year. It had 84K when I bought it. I have put 9,600 on it averaging 50.6mpg. I hypermile to get that number. I drive mostly highway. I have been told that on the highway with cruise set tp 65-67mph the TDI Passat will get mid 50's. I'm going to wait till fall before I order a '12 Passat TDI 6MT. The new Passat is a luxury car compared to a HCH II

Yes , but that Passat will cost a pile more in the end. Brian why do you worry about the traction battery so much! Do you worry about the CVT,ICE or the electric motor? They will set you back much more if they pack it in! H

Harold can you expand. My main issue is I drive 38K a year. And I have had diesels in the past I put 300+K on and still going strong. I'm concerned with the battery issues these things have how long before they are a money pit...

Some folks with HCH2 are getting used packs from wrecks for $500 . Most packs last for many years. Some are having some issue's, but many like me are not. VW TDI are not the most reliable car out their! The new Diesel Auto's require additives every so many miles for cleaning up the exhaust which adds to the cost. Diesel is much more expensive! I agree the TDI's are nice cars, but diesels smells bad. Prius are also making big inroads in Europe as well these days. My Hybrids have been trouble free and I always am 55 mpg U.S and higher at the pumps. H

It depends on how you drive. I have both a TDI and a HCH -- when I want neck snapping acceleration and German sports sedan handling, I take the TDI. When I want better mileage, I take the HCH.
