is this really true? i thought only the Prius could do this.

It is possible to do if all the conditions are exactly right. I do it when I get to work and have to drive through the parking lot wich is flat, the car fully warmed up and I am driving 10 mph with a fairly fully charged battery...that said, I would venture to say it happens less than 5% of the time.

 

I think "propels you in silence" is hyperbole: it is more likely to slip into electric-propulsion only at low speeds: we routinely roll the last 100 yards or so into our cul-de-sac on electric-only, but almost any little extra pressure on the gas and the engine will kick back in.
