Default Fuel fill flap

Silly question.

So I live in New Jersey, one of two states where you don't (and can't) pump your own gas. Therefore, I rarely unscrew the gas cap and see what's underneath. I traveled to Georgia this weekend, though, and when filling up I noticed that the receptacle for the gas pump's nozzle doesn't have one of those metal flaps that covers the hole (i.e., as you insert the nozzle, the flap would be pushed back). As far as I can remember, most cars I've seen have such a flap.

Is this just my Civic or are they all like this?

My '06 also does not have the little flap you're referring to.

I think the flap you refer to dates back to when both leaded and unleaded gas was still available. To prevent inserting a larger fuel nozzle into a car requiring unleaded, these flaps or restrictor plates were added so that only unleaded nozzles, which were smaller, would fit. Since leaded gas has disappeared for so long now, newer cars lack this feature.

Older members may remember some people removed these restriction plates and filled their cars with leaded gas because it was cheaper and their engines often ran better. Only problem: the lead wrecked the catalytic converters. If you lived where your car needed to pass an emissions test, it became an expensive lesson.

History lesson over!!
