What exactly you mean by checking it? Wouldnt I have a warning that the 12v is going bad?
yeah, a 12V going bad is a gas waster and the indicator can fool people. Check the oil too, some shops put the wrong oil and that will chomp 10mpg or more; others will put too much oil and that will kill your mileage too.
check the alignment every 2 years. a bit off is all it takes to prevent the car from coasting better.

BTW, my life time mpg is sitting in the low 50's without hypermilin
