So was my last change. I let the transmission drain for a long time to get as much as I can out of the torque converter, and it was 3/3 spot on.

In a few threads I've read others replacing the cvt fluid 3 times, running the car between each, to attempt to replace the majority of all 5 quarts. Is the MM assuming a full flush when it tells you to replace cvt fluid, or only a single 3 quart change? Which to do?

I prefer only doing it once if that's okay.

Jaba
Only use three quarts . The three times change is for when you have issue's with the CVT. Jerky or what-ever. Hal

umm, there's no torque converter on a CVT tranny, only a clutch pack.

and yes, i only filled mine through the dipstick plug. walk into auto parts store and ask for a tranny funnel....its an easy fill.

how many quarts of oil does a 2004 Saturn Ion 2.2 liter Ecotec takeI haven't really had any transmission problems but I wanted to do a soft flush so I drained out one and a half quarts and replaced one and a half quarts is this okay and I just added the Valvoline full synthetic CVT transmission fluid

This is the simple calculation:

After 1 drain and refill 3 qt drained 2.4 qt left means 3/5.4= 56% of fluid was drained.

After 2nd drain and fill 56% of the remaining 2.4 qt of old fluid is replaced = 1.3 qt which means 4.3/5.4 approx = 80% of original fluid is now replaced.

After 3rd drain and fill 56% of the remaining 1.1 qt old fluid is replaced = .62 qt which means approx 4.92/5.4 = 91% of original fluid is now replaced.

So it seems a second drain and fill might be worth it to get 80% fluid out but in my opinion a 3rd drain and fill to get to 91% is probably not worth it.

Easy mode:

Change 3 qts (1 drain/fill) every other oil change (about 15K miles).
