Re: Estimated $$ savings thus far
msantos has a great photo on here some place that shows how he put the insulation in the grill. on the top, i just kind of jammed it in there, since it's a tight squeeze. on the lower grill area, i held it in with wire tires around the grill. it stays pretty well, and i think it's helped my winter numbers quite a bit. and come spring (please!!!) it will be easy to remove.

Re: Estimated $$ savings thus far
The MPG rating and cost savings is surely not the ONLY reason to drive a hybrid. It's only one of many reasons. I looked at it as an investment in knowing that no matter what the price of fuel was, i was going to save money. Not to mention get the latest and greatest technology out there!! I plan on owning this TCH for many years and will get back my investment i'm sure.....and pollute far less with an AT_PZEV vehicle!!

Re: Estimated $$ savings thus far
My HCHII replaced a 1990 Honda Civic.
In 2006 I traveled 11,267 km and averaged 8.15 l/100km in the 1990.
Since March 2007 when I got my HCHII I've averaged 5.46 l/100km an improvement of 2.69 l/100km. My current price of gas is $1.10/litre so if I drive the same km I'll save $332.93
fyi this is what my 1990 cost:
Costs Description
$16,509.50 purchase cost, Apr. 1, 1990
$10,936.47 gas to Mar. 16, 2007
$9,621.65 maint. to Oct 21, 2006
$13,155.33 insurance to 2007
$50,222.95 Total
$0.16 Cost per Km (excluding purchase cost)
$0.24 Cost per Km (including purchase cost)
$1,983 Cost per year (excluding purchase cost)
$2,954 Cost per year (including purchase cost)
$0.05 maint. cost per Km
$0.09 gas cost per Km (in 2006)
$0.04 gas cost per Km (in 1991)
I put premium, with 10% ethanol in that car (+10 cents/l) but I'm not doing that with the HCHII. I didn't consider the $2500 I got trade in for the car.
I'm expecting to save a fair bit on brakes.

I wouldn't go so far to say it's the latest and greatest... it's actually pretty old technology but it is the most affordable I guess.

Re: Estimated $$ savings thus far
Factoring in the $50/mo. added car payments vs. my financed 2003 Accord, I'm only $200 ahead (plus the portion of tax credit not eaten by the AMT) for the first 15 months.
But I'm about 200 hours ahead based on saving about 40 min. a day in the HOV lane.
So I'm thankful, either way.
