Default Double Recall!

Well, I usually don't post on Saturday morning, but my morning paper had some breaking news. Two recalls for the HCHII!

One for a leaky wheel bearing that could case a wheel to fall off.
Affected production dates: 3-24-2005 through 2-8-2007.

Letters go out Sept 17th.

And one for 2006's (no spec dates that I can see) for grease building up on the steering column that could allow oil to drip onto a switch, preventing the brake lights from illuminating and/or preventing drivers from shifting out of park.

Letters go out Sept 27th.

FYI, Ian

How do we know our production date? I bought in May of 07 so I may not be affected.

Anyone correct me if I am wrong, but if you look on your driver's side door, and look at the VIN sticker, the sticker also says where it was manufactured and I belive the manufacturing date.

I also bought my 2007 HCH in May, but it has a date of 12/06.

Grr.... Mine's definitely within the first recall window, but there's no mention of it on OwnerLink yet. Same with the second... it's an '06, but nothing about it on OL.

(It's not totally worthless though... it does list my DC battery cap as having been fixed)

As mentioned, nothing on ownerlink yet. Called a friend of mine who works in the service department and he showed nothing either. Guess I'll see if the letter arrives.

Thanks for the info. My HCH was manufactured in 2/07. I'm not sure if it was before or after the 8th. I guess I'll just wait for the letter (or no letter). There is nothing on my owner link either.

Mine was made 6/07 so I guess I'm in the clear. Phew!

I think this is still very new info. If you google for it you can find news references to it, but I couldn't easily find the recalls on NHTSA's website (the articles say they're posted there). I guess I didn't want to take the time to navigate their horrible website.

Oh, and it's been my experience that the dealers start getting informed not much before we get our letters. FWIW.

Honda Recalls 2006-'07 Civics Over Damaged Wheel Sensors and Bearings

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Honda is recalling 182,756 Civic coupes and sedans from model years 2006-'07 to fix damaged rear wheel sensors and bearings that could cause a wheel to fall off the car.

The automaker says dealers will inspect rear antilock-brake sensors and wheel bearings for damage and replace them free of charge. The recall is to start today (September 17).

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that on certain Civics, the wheel speed sensor housing uses an O-ring seal to prevent leakage to or from the wheel bearing. "If assembled improperly, the O-ring may not seal properly, allowing water to enter the wheel bearing and eventually cause damage to the bearing, especially in areas where use of road salt is prevalent," it said. "If the driver continues to drive with this condition, it is possible for the wheel bearing to become loose. This could cause a wheel to fall off the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash."

Two such cases were reported in Canada.

Honda is also recalling 19,900 Civic sedans and hybrids from the 2006 model year to repair a brake-light switch. The problem can cause Civics with automatic transmissions to become stuck in Park.

Honda can be contacted at (800) 999-1009.

What this means to you: If you own any of the aforementioned Hondas, better have them checked out ASAP at the dealership.
