Can you guess how far I've gone?
The regular Civic has a 13.2 gallon tank. But the Civic Hybrid only has a 12.3 gallon capacity. I believe this is because of the extra space the batteries require.
Anyway, it's possible to pump in more gasoline than the advertised tank capacity because the filler neck holds 1/2 gal. or so. Not recommended, but possible. I never fill my tank and tube completely, but I go to the third click.
Also, I've found that the Hybrid has one full gallon left after the fuel guage goes completely dark. My most recent fill-up took 11.3 gal. to the 3rd click, and I was 20 miles past "Empty." So the dreaded 'unkown zone' should get you at least as far as the current mpg avg. on your trip meter.

i always fill until it clicks, no more.
That's pretty cool. It clearly shows that the capacity from the manual is from the first click all the way down to empty. I often wondered if it included the volume that could be topped off, but I guess it doesn't. Also, the HCH-I has a larger tank than the HCH-II.
That's true -- the HCH 1 has a 13.2 gallon tank, but the HCH 2 only has 12.3. DougD has a line in his post about "2007 HCH, lovin' every minute," so I thought he owned an HCH 2.
Here's my latest mpg. This is what you get with quick acceleration, 65 mph highway speeds, air conditioning and (yes) cruise control:

Also, my HCH 2 only has 2,800 miles, so I expect this number to improve.

I live in NJ. The service attendant does it for me
I pay by cc, so usually when I watch they just stop at 1 click, but there is probably some room for inconsistency, at least as far as my MPG calculations go. Just yesterday I had the first fill-up where the calculated MPG was less than the display. by 1mpg. Thought I had a 60mpg tank!
Hills are my friends. What goes up, must come down. The downhills are perfect for FASing. I get my best numbers driving in hilly areas (most of my driving).
My driving is fairly flat [which is why cruise control doesn't really hurt me] but I DO go over two very large bridges a few times a week.
These are over the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach so they are high (and steep) enough for huge container ships to pass under.
FWIW, here's the best I can do on these bridges:
Going up I'm in the rightmost of 3 lanes so I allow my speed to drop down to about 25 at the top - any lower would be very rude since cars want to go 60 at the top.
(Fortunately, many huge trucks often slow the right lane down already.)
On the way down I adjust pressure on the accelerator so the instantaneous MPG display stays at 150 MPG but I allow the car to pick up *maximum* speed by not allowing any charge lights to come on . . .
This is tough; it requires looking at two displays and traffic and very fine foot muscle control.
If I do this the average MPG returns to what it was before the bridges.
I have never been able to use the bridges to get my MPG to actually go up.

I just got back from a lunchtime errand. This particular drive is one of my favorite FE routes. This is because of all the hills. Declines such that speed is maintained during an FAS are perfect.

Trip Back

I left with 4 bars on my SOC and I returned with 4 bars.
This route has been very good to me in my HiHy as well.
