Default 2009-2011 Honda Civic Hybrid Battery Warranty Extension

This was sent to owners in March of 2015:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...57550-8765.pdf

Extends battery warranty to 10 years/150,000 miles for ALL states.

I guess when the 09 and 10 model years have a 30% replacement rate as of 2013, you have to admit you have a problem.

I blame Toyota.

Looks like for the 2nd generation of the HCH, for non-CARB states, the warranty is as follows then, in terms of years & miles:

2006: 9/96,400
2007: 9/92,000
2008: 9/92,000
2009: 10/150,000
2010: 10/150,000
2011: 10/150,000

So basically the 2007 & 2008 owners get the shortest end of the stick.

My battery failed earlier this year & was replaced, was covered by Honda. Only 71k miles on the car at the time.

I think it's finally happened: my 2008 HCH, bought 10/31/07, recalibrates once or twice every mile or so trip. [For those not knowing what a recal is, and/or to make sure I've got it right: charge goes to zero, charges back up to full, discharges all in pretty rapid order.]
S Keith has me fully sold on building or getting a grid charger, but I don't want to void my extended warranty, so I'm delaying.
So...what do I do now? Call up my dealer, come in for an appointment, hope they 1) don't charge me for the visit, and 2) replace the battery?

IMHO, you are unlikely to get any resolution until you get an actual IMA light.

If you can convince the service manager to take a ride with you and witness the frequent recalibrations, you might be able to talk them into it particularly if your mileage has gone into the toilet.

When you say "extended" warranty, what is that? The IMA battery is warrantied for 9y/92k miles unless you're in a SULEV state.

If you purchased some sort of extended warranty from the dealer, I would not expect it to cover the IMA battery.

If you find you're out of the warranty period, NOW is a good time to conduct a grid charge/discharge.

Good luck,

Steve

Thank you...good questions. By extended warranty, I meant that early in this thread, one learns that what was an 8 year warranty has become 9.

I don't want to risk voiding the warranty, so I'm going to hold off grid charging until either the IMA light comes on for good, or I hit that 9 year mark. We have only about 45K on the car.

Gotcha... I didn't scroll up and my memory is like an iron.. sieve.

If you're right on the cusp, then yes, pursue replacement. Since the replacement won't have any significant warranty, I would start grid charging every oil change as preventative maintenance.

While initially encouraged by the 2006 letter from American Honda extending the warranty on Civic Hybids to 10 yrs/150,000 miles, my call to American Honda and the local dealership, Gillman Honda of San Benito, TX, indicates they will not honor that letter.

The claim is that the vin number for my 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid is not covered by the extension.

This is my third Honda and my last.

Not sure what you're getting at. The letter was for 09-11 only.

08 is not covered.

That letter, in combination with the 12-077 Service Bulletin, did give me some initial hope.

Bumblebee may be my only hope.
