Default 1st A1 maintenace

Just finished performing the first A1 maintenance on my Hybrid. It took me about an hour to complete, and was extremely easy. Technically I actually did a B1 maintenance because I always change the oil filter at the fluid change time. Total out of pocket cost was $29.40

I replaced the oil with Mobil-1 0-20, and took a sample of the old oil to be sent off to have an analysis done on it. It will be interesting to see how that comes back. I will publish it when I get the results.

I changed the oil when the life meter went to 0% which in this case was 9180 miles. In the future I will probably settle into 10K intervals. Interesting enough is that the car burned less than 8 oz. of oil in that 9180 miles. I attribute that to the outstanding Honda manufacturing!

It burned oil??? My 2003 HCH with 102,000 km on it doesn't burn any oil. Keep an eye on it.It may be too early to get any real results from your oil analysis - you would get alot of breakin wear.

Well, if Honda's don't burn oil, perhaps I used the wrong description. While I did not add any oil during the last 9100 miles, at change time the level was about 6-7 fluid oz. below the top mark on the dipstick (1/4 below the top mark, 3/4 from the bottom mark). It could have very well been that the car was not filled to the top mark in the first place. Regardless, less than a 1/4 of a quart for that number of miles is pretty good, especially on the initial oil fill.

Default Results of first oil analysis

Here is the result of the oil analysis of the factory fill oil from my HCHII. As would be expected out of a brand new engine, there was a high concentration of materials in the oil. It will be interesting to see results of testing the next oil change to see if it is fully broken in.

It is strang that a filter is not called for on the first A1 maint.. Do most of you change the filter on the A1?

I haven't changed my oil yet (I haven't even put gas in it yet...), but when I do I'll replace the filter with a Mobile 1 filter. I just can't imagine doing an oil change without changing the filter. I'm still having a hard time believing that it's the best thing to leave the original oil in the engine for 8-9 thousand miles too. I'm used to doing it at 2-3k. 5k tops. 9k? Before the FIRST change??? There's only 3.5 quarts in there, how can it last that long? I'll get over the interval thing somehow, but I can't envision myself ever changing the oil and not the filter.

I guess a person should really do what the maint. minder says. Its hard to break old habits! It wasn't long ago you had to drive no faster than 40mph for 500 miles then change oil and filter at 500 mile. Big change in autos over the last 10 yrs., for the better!
