Anyway, if you ever delve into valve check again, I'd suggest to try cowl removal: with the steep windshield rake the cowl hangs out more-or-less halfway over the engine valve cover area.

Nick: Thanks for the update starting this thread. I'm in the same frame of mind as you. My car only has about 90,000 kms (trouble free) on it right now, but I do everything myself (except the 2 rear suspension parts replaced under warranty 2 years ago) and have had no software updates, etc done. As you say, knock on wood and hope for the best....
