If it's just a bad lifter or cam, I would look for an independent shop to fix it for less,

Well, after the shop had it for two weeks, I got it back for about $1,620. They noticed that the lifter on #8 was gunked up. They replaced all lifters on that side, new gaskets, and put it all back together. Seems to work well. Now. When I picked it up, it overheated. Took it back, and the antifreeze system had a bubble in it. Then, I had a misfire on #4. Cracked spark plug.

My confidence in this team is about 40%, but I'm out for about a third of the next lowest quote.

I also just got a "service traction control" light, but I cycled the system and it went away quick. Will keep an eye out for that.

 

So it's been almost a week. No check engine light. Still some occasional lurches. Time to replace the 12v even though everyone says it's ok?
