I only use "L" when I am coasting down a long hill.

The alternative, is to keep it in "D" and lightly apply the brakes. Doing that, turns the brake lights 'on', and REALLY pisses off the people behind me. They really want to do 10 to 20 MPH over the speed limit, and my brake lights really dash any such hope. No brake lights means I am coasting as fast as I can (they have no idea I am in "L").
