The problem consumers have is they're too dumb to get their government to force the car manufacturers (since the manufacturers can't seem to offer it voluntarily) to equip every car with an instrument panel display of these codes. Consumers happily lap up zillions of other questionable electronic functions, but don't demand this basic function. Anyone even a bit familiar with the Escape's layers of menus can see how easy this would be to implement.
