Thumbs up Pretty Good mpg

My wife normally drives the FEH, but she was away this week with the kids, so I drove it.

I started with 125 miles and the OSD reading 32.7. Pushed it to read 35.7 (peaked at 35.8) for a total of 450+ miles.

Not bad, considering I don't drive it too often.

Good for you! This week has been a good week for mpg, hasn't it? Partly the weather, I think. No A/C, no heat- that helps. And then the engine doesn't take as long to warm up when it's not so cold out anymore.

I'm nearing a personal best, myself. I had my HCH up to 57.5 for the first couple hundred miles, but then I let my dad drive and it plummeted to 52.9 after about sixty-five miles. Now I've been doing my regular commute since the weekend and it's back up to 53.3 after about 400 miles on this tank and the fuel gauge at the halfway mark (which seems off). My previous personal best was 49.9, so if I can keep it here or sneak it up another few notches in the next couple of days, I'll blow my old mark out of the water. Crossing my fingers!

That's great!

With the warm weather, my tank averages have shot up as well. 37.1 for my last tank. (4WD, mostly expressway) It's weird, I had been battling for 35 MPGs last summer, and already I hit 36 the first week we had good weather, and 35 rather consistantly, and now approaching 37+! I guess despite all those crappy winter tanks, the added miles have made a difference.

I set the cruise control at 65 MPH and relax. Occasionally (though more frequently as gas prices rise) if I see a good opportunity, I'll slow her down to 60 and get in with a pack of slower moving vehicles.

I have found out that if I can keep the RPMs below 1500, the OSD will show a gradual upstep. In traffic, on a relatively flat highway, it seems that 62 mpg and 1500 rpm works well. I have not seen a downtick on the OSD during that time frame, and had the OSD up has high as 38.4 (early part of tank).
