Can't tell you what John did but I wasn't driving the one I had any different than the hybrid.... How can I be sure of that? Because I frankly am too lazy to drive my Hybrid any differently than normal, hence my average of ~30MPG.

Then buy the V6. Though I would get a guaranteed commitment of 26 mpg (city?) in writing from the dealer.

I drive a V6 Escape. My wife's car is the 07 FEH. I get 16 to 19 MPG in the V6 and we get about 33 in the EH....so the dealer is quite a bit cracked if he thinks you can get 26 MPG in a V6 and only 28 in the EH....

I have rented a V6 Escape and a 4 CYL Escape, both FWD. The V6 averaged 17, and the 4 banger got maybe 22. The V6 had adequate power, the 4 CYL was terrible....
