There are two other factors
- Electrical assist from the motors during speed-up-from-stop, which gets the FEH up to speed while using less gas. Accelerating is the time when any vehicle uses the most gas.
- Atkinson cycle engine, which allows the FEH to get better MPG with a smaller displacement engine.

Sorry, my mistake. I guess the "ICU" threw me. But I should have known you meant ICE.
