This does not seem to consistently be the case with my FEH (06, 4wd). This is true even when SOC should be high enough to drop into EV. I was just curious...

Thanks,

Dan at CleanMPG.com was the first I know to observe this in his wife's '08 MMH I think. I tried it in my '05 FEH and sure enough it works in my vehicle also. All the times I've tried it, it worked for me if the FEH met all the other conditions for EV.

My '06 fwd does it at someplace just below 30.

You can get zero regen and zero assist in Drive with a gentle pedal press in the 2005's. This is the same as coasting in N. If you do it right, you will coast just as far and get the same MPG.

I have proven this many times, on many trips... too many times to count.

However.... It takes practice and a ScanGauge also helps to see when you have it just right.

Use what you like and works best for you.
I use my gas pedal to coast free wheel in Drive for short coasts.
I use N to coast for longer distances so I can relax my foot.
There's a time and place for each technique.

There is no mechanical advantage to coasting in N since the gears are always in mesh.

-John
