How NOT to do the Cabin Air filter
I added a cabin air filter to my 2006 MMH (it didn't come with one). I installed a Motorcraft FP-49 filter purchased from a Ford dealer. It was about $30 uninstalled.
I followed the excellent instructions here on GreenHybrid to install it myself.
I found that the FP-49 BARELY fits. It's as if the filter is the same exact size as the filter housing. I had to jam it in a little, which caused a few of the filter pleats to buckle. It's in there, though. I noticed that the outside edges of the filter were wrapped with some sort of fluffy fabric. If I had stripped that off it would have fit better.
My 2006 MMH does have a plastic screen under where the filter sits that would screen out large debris.
Lastly, in case Ford is reading, the filter install process could be made more user friendly by improving access to the filter. Specifically, it shouldn't require a screwdriver and those plastic rivet things along the front of the housing are particularly lame. Check out the E46 BMW. It has a couple of hand-turn locks that release the filter cover. It is perfect. In your defense, the MMH filter process is way better than the 2000 Saab 9-3 system, which requires complete removal of the windshield wiper arms.

We need a different way of getting through to Ford. They seem to care less than not at all about our individual suggestions (probably Walt is right that they don't think of us as their own customers, but as customers of the dealer), but in numbers there is strength. What I have discovered in the past about large companies is that if you write something sensible (not just a gripe) to the CEO or President personally, you have a better chance of someone reading it than if you had aimed lower.
I can only repeat what I wrote a few months ago. to wit:
"I think it would be good for all us owners to unite and pressure Ford (perhaps even go the the industry gossip sheets, which they surely read) to set up a technical customer relations site, as most reputable companies do. True, it's often staffed by dunderheads, but at least it's a way past their moat. If we all united on some proposal, they might conceivably take notice."
And while I'm writing, has anyone figured out the best way to install an outside air temp thermometer in the FEH? I rode in my daughter's Toyota over the holidays, and it is littered with temperature displays, inside, outside, rear seat, etc. They need those temps to run the A/C system, so the information is available, and it is just a matter of displays. Ford, take notice. (Ho, ho, ho.)

The Prius has the filter behind the glove box. You must empty the glove box, but then you just twist two ***** and the door flops down and you can easily pull the filter out to replace it.
You are lucky that your Saab only required the wiper arms to come off, most Saab service used to involve pulling the engine (e.g. wiper motor on a Saab 99).
I think this is the '07 cabin air filter. Looks like fordaccessories.com finally got it right. I'd like to buy one, but not for $28. Anyone see any less expensive replacements yet?
I'd like to just take mine out, if it's even in there. In my day, we didn't need filtered cabin air, bottled water, hard hats, seat belts, motorcycle helmets, etc., becuase we was a bunch of ignorant morons, and WE LIKED IT THAT WAY!!!!!
