Drum roll please... Ford says the fans are going to be covered!!! Thank you all for your help. I don't know what changed their answer, but all I can say to anyone else is keep fighting! I was going to take it to court if I had to.

I called Ford HQ in Detroit this morning in an attempt to get a corporate warranty person, but ended up back at customer service...blah blah...it was like Groundhog Day - I explained, they called the dealer, called back and said it wasn't covered...again.

So I asked for someone higher and got a supervisor. He was nice. I made the same old argument about the fans being inside the battery (which is covered as a whole, so components should be), cited the new warranty that includes fans now that they're external, TSB that says it's covered under warranty (doesn't say it's just the 3/36), and so on with all the ammunition gained on this forum. Spent many minutes on hold...ending with:

"Since this is the Customer Relationship Center, you should know I've owned 5 Fords including 4 different models, and I've never had any issues and been very happy with Ford. But I've only owned this one 2 months, and after everything I'm going through now, it's really hurting how I feel about Ford. I hope you can work something out." (at this point I was on the verge of tears, which I'm sure he heard in my voice - sorry, I'm a girl.)

Lo and behold, I got a call back saying he talked to the service manager at the dealer and it's going to be covered! What changed from 4 hours ago? I'm sure I have a few more gray hairs as a result, and no real help for anyone else - just don't give up with the first customer service person who says no.

Just waiting for the part to arrive from Canada. The first dealer got the part in a day, and this has been a few already...not sure what's up with that. But the car has been working fine the past few days, so I'll wait.

Thanks everyone, especially Joe. I talked to your service guy, and he tried to help me, but my dealer didn't seem interested in talking to him.

Glad this worked out for you. The printed TSB the dealer provided me listed 3/36K as the only warranty coverage. In my post-resolution conversation with Autumn I suggested changing the warranty coverages listed on the TSB would be one fix for this coverage problem...perhaps Ford actually changed it? We'll have to wait for the next one....

Hi All,

New member here I just wanted to register to let you know how my own experience turned out and to thank you all.

I have an 2006 Escape Hybrid with 115000 miles and on a recent hot humid summer day my Escape stopped going into EV mode. After 6 trips to my local dealership with several different diagnoses we finally came up with the fault code P0A81 TSB 09-17-7 and what a shocker they told me that it wasn't covered under warranty. Even though I gave them the codes that were provided by the members of this forum. I thought here I go as well, ready to start arguing with Ford corporate.

I took one bloggers advice and called another dealership, Fritts Ford in Riveside, CA, and spoke with Terry Jones, told her the problem and she contacted her warranty specialist and like magic was told code 5M6Z 10B759 A was covered under warranty and they would be able to do the work. They even had the part in stock. I dropped my Escape off in the evening and they had it back to my before end of work day the next day. 4 hours total work. From start to finish the whole process took 2 weeks.

I just wanted to thank everyone on this list and to tell anyone after me that if the first dealership doesn't do the work under warranty, try another, and another if need be. Don't give up hope.

Here is apparently the deal to get this properly covered under the 8/100K (10/150K) unique hybrid component warranty...the part number for the cooling fan kit has to be coded differently.... The part number for my fans was 5M6Z-10C659-A

IT HAS TO BE CODED:

5M6Z-10B759-A

(The 7th and 8th characters are different.)

She called my local dealership and left a message for my service adviser. I left a message for him as well. As soon as I confirm all is well I'll probably post the solution to this PIA in its own thread to make it easier for those who follow.

Thanks again for all the suggestions, valuable information and especially Alaska's post (combined with more than a little good luck) to get this resolved. (I sure hope I'm not being premature in my mini celebration here.)
And THANK YOU to GatorJ and Alaska for posting this! I referred my Ford dealer to the correct part number to replace my failing HV battery fan assembly, and he was amazed that it was not in his computer, which only showed the prior number. That saved me over $thousand$! Even his warrantee manager at dealership was amazed, "how could Ford make such a mistake?" ... Good question. I forwarded them this page, per their request, so they can address their problem. Anyway, that part IS COVERED under warrantee. Unfortunately, my failing coolant pump was not, so have to eat it. My 2006 4WD Escape Hybrid has over 65K miles, but runs great otherwise, except for EV mode failure after about 1/2 hour driving, especially in warm weather.

But great savings knowing that Ford's warrantee applies to this fan cooling assembly, as it is something that seems to fail within the (California) 10 year battery warrantee period.

Can't thank you enough. Muchas gracias!

Good job...perhaps this is finally starting to get easier for people.

Thanks to everyone for their posts on this issue. I'm in CA and have a dealership currently working to replace my cooling fans under warranty. I did receive a message from the dealership the other day saying that they strongly recommend reprogramming my PCM since they are installing the new cooling fans module. This reprogramming is not covered under warranty even though the replacement of the fans is covered. Does this sound normal to anyone? I don't mind paying for it as long as it really is recommended. I'm a little skeptical because it sounds like something that could have been mentioned when I originally contacted the dealership about this issue.

The dealerships recommend lots of unnecessary things. If PCM reprogramming was necessary following fan replacement then it would be cover under the same warranty provision as the fans. It sounds bogus to me. Plus, the fans are passive devices, the PCM knowns nothing about them, just whether or not the battery is sufficiently cool.

Maybe someone else knows better and will comment.

I'm about to pull my hair out from dealing with this very same problem from Ford. I keep getting the same run around about the part number not being covered under my hybrid warranty even though I only have 56k on the vehicle. I came armed with the new code number provided by you guys here on this forum and they refuse to use to for my vehicle saying that my part number, good old POA81 is not part of the kit. I have talked to Ford customer relations multiple times with no help there, Milli does not seem to be with the compnay anymore. I got stuck with a $761 dollar bill just to get my car and don't know what else to do. I did find it interesting though that apparently the mechanics do not get paid under warranty work(co-workers brother is a Honda Tech)so they only make money off of repair work not covered under warranty. As much as I love my Ford, dealing with all this mess has really turned me off of ever buying one again. Oh and I forgot to mention, my car died the night I brought it home from the dealer and I had to replace the battery in it for another $114 dollars...but it was just a coincedence of course.
