Default To Fix or To Sell?

Hello All,

I currently have a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid in the shop. The "high temperature" warning led to a blown head gasket diagnosis revealing an eroded engine block. I now face a hefty $3000 bill to fix the car. The car is in amazing shape with all of the amenities (i.e. power steering, heated leather seats, sky roof, etc.). In addition, new tires and we just changed the brakes. We've had no issues with the car, but I am not sure I can stomach paying that much to replace the engine. It would actually be cheaper $2200, but we already sank $800 in for the labor to pull off the head of the engine. Any thoughts?

$2200 would get you going again, but it's still probably a $5k car even with the engine work. Hard call to make, but if you got another few years of driving then it might be worth it.

I'm going through a similar thing with an '88 Blazer. Replaced tires, battery, cat, headliner, etc and then the transmission failed. Cost to repair is $2k, and I probably won't.

Unless the miles are pretty low they're about a 4k truck now. I wouldn't bother getting it running again, the Escape just isn't a very great vehicle in general.
