Finally doing it right.

Finally doing it right.
I am finally hypermiling my Mercury Mariner Hybrid AWD! After almost 2 years of ownership I am doing it right.
I have a AWD 2006 Mariner. It has about 24,000 miles. I really haven't been able to get more than 29 maybe 30mpg. Right now I am getting 32.5mpg.
First, I found a better route to and from work. Second, I believe my biggest problem was always trying to get the car to EV. I think that was my mistake. Instead of forcing EV all of the time, I coast gentily on flat and slight downhill slopes. The only time I will force EV is for slightly steeper slopes and when I am near home. I didn't think I could break 30 with my AWD, but I have found out I am wrong. Well there's a first time for everything (I wish).

John above hit the nail square on the head. I'd maybe argure it's 40% what your drive, and 60% how you drive, but either way, it's a driving mentality. My wife is getting 34 mpg on our 08 FEH now that the weather has warmed, and she used to be the lead footed Ford Explorer driver. So the difference is the vehicle and how she drives it.
I'm getting almost 30mpg on my Ford Ranger Edge Extended cab, 3.0L, 5sp Manual, and that isn't the world's most economical vehicle, but it's "how you drive" that counts. You do the best you can under the driving conditons that you have. I'm getting 8-10 mpg more than other Ford Ranger drivers at work with comparably equipment vehicles. It's a mindset.
CONGRATULATIONS!
P.S. Even school busses and church busses pass me, and I love it. Now if I just drove a Honda Insight like John... The American car manufacturer's should be flooding us with cars like the 2000-2006 Insight.
