The usual commute for SWMBO FEH is ~60miles/day, secondary roads at 35 to 50mph. Deer, turkeys, grandma's, curves, frost, etc. keep the speed controlled.

Trip to town once or twice a week from work for errands and an occasional freeway jaunt (Wednesdays to get a fancy coffee in the am).

THanks everyone. Yes it gets cold here, I'm in a valley near the pocono mountains...thirties for highs this week and singles at night. I need to crunch the number again I guess....I was figuring 20mpg for a gas escape which my girlfriend has and just informed me is high...she gets 20 if she's lucky, better refigure at 17/18...and was using 30 for the FEH....sounds like that's low for an average also...showing 32 on the home page here...plus my dealer was quoting nav on the hybrid (I want that hybrid readout...but don't know it's worth the $$ when I install aftermarket nav units so paying for the nav would kill me) and no nav on the gas version which made the price difference look even worse...

PB-
Yes I am. I'm down to 22. I was at 32 two weeks ago. This mileage is what I was getting in my '05 V6 AWD gas Escape in the winter. I'd rather have the 4 wheel drive.
Slick-
In summer I was getting mid-30s with the AC on and about 60% highway miles. If you do more under 40 MPH driving it would get better (or using some of the tricks found on this site). My gas Escape never got over 25 or 26 MPG in the summer. Overall, even with my drop in mileage for winter, I'll still do better (and I've been told once my car gets used to the cold it will get better) on an annual basis, with about 150 gallons of saved gasoline.

Slick,

As per my "Intro" post, I went through a quest trying to get a FEH. You mentioned you live near Buffalo. Well, according to Ford, as per 2 weeks ago, there were 6 FEH's virtually east of the Mississippi, save a few in Florida. 4 of those were AWD, 2 were FWD. I got one of the FWD's.

The NYC taxi commission has virtually made getting one in the northeast impossible for about 4 to 6+ months, according to a sales person in NJ who "ordered" me one. My guess is your salesperson wants to sell something he has in stock and knows how bad the ordering process is for a new FEH. Think about it, he may not see a commission until July?

As for driving on a highway often. 90% of my commute is highway. No special techniques and I get about 30-31MPG and I am very happy. I went to the FEH from a Honda Element that got 18-20MPG on the same exact route.

Your salesperson is probably
