Angry AC in negative function mode. Ideas or tips welcome

Subject is a 2010 Ford Escape Hippo with approximately 280,000 km. Original compressor, evaporator and condenser. Refrigerant gas present. Tried adding some but "appears" properly charged, more or less. Can't connect to Forscan for now. Hoping a "if in doubt, give it a clout" on a sensor could get it working again. Vehicle still getting 6.5- 7.5 litres per 100km so it's been a good endangered species. Replacing the compressor doesn't make financial sense, even if I could get a warranted used one which would be rare. Any pointers on doing a ghetto, shade tree diagnosis would be helpful. In the worst case, we will convert it into a three season winter thrasher. Have a great hybrid day!
